The Incredible Rescue

It was late February 1995 when Jim Gilchrist set out on a leisurely walk with his two dogs, "Tara and Tiree". The trio made their way along their usual route, through a wooded area and across a section of frozen Lake Simcoe.

Walking behind Tara and Tiree, Jim suddenly fell through the ice approximately 300 meters from shore. As Jim tried to lift himself out of the chilling water, the ice continued the break. Immediately, Tara the Rottweiler, ran to aide her owner who was struggling to stay afloat. As she approached the spot where Jim was in the water, she too fell through the ice.

While Jim and Tara both struggled, Tiree began to make her way towards them. Jim was afraid that the situation was about to become much worse, certain that Tiree would fall through the ice when she reached him. Sensing that something was wrong, Tiree crouched about 12 feet  from Jim and began to crawl on her belly, when Tiree finally reached them, Jim grabbed a hold of her collar to stay afloat, and helped Tara to scramble onto the ice. Once out of the water, Tara followed Tiree's lead and lay on her stomach, allowing Jim to grab hold of her collar too. With their claws scratching the ice, the duo was able to slowly drag Jim far enough out of the water for him to climb onto the ice and reach safety on the shore.

This amazing story clearly shows the devotion and intelligence that these beautiful animals possess.

Like they say a dog is a man or women's best friend.
